Geocache Description:

First … something for those of you who watch cable TV late at night:

WE HAVE FIELDS – YES FIELDS – GONE TOTALLY WILD!!!!

Ever wonder what happens if you let a field “go wild” for a few decades? Nature takes it back in its own way.

Take a look around the area when you get to the cache site. How can you tell this used to be a field? Notice the absence of large trees and how the biggest trees are fast growing species like the bitternut hickory. Also, you can see larger tress in the fence line to the east. If you compare this area to the ground to the north, you can see subtle differences in the undergrowth.

Still not convinced? Take a look at the 1930’s aerial photo that you can find here:

This isn’t intended to be a very difficult find, and it’s not far off the trail. The closest parking is at the southbound rest area on I-35. You can follow a trail from the back of the rest area to the area of the cache. The deer use this area a lot so you might want to bring a camera. For a longer trek, you can follow trails from the Bear Creek access or from Soper’s Mill. Please follow the trails to reduce the impact.

I noticed some poison ivy in the area while I was scouting the cache site, particularly along the smaller side trail that leads to the cache. Unless you’re immune, this probably isn’t a good one to try in shorts and sandals.

The Geocache Placement Permit has been approved by Story County Conservation.
