Geocache Description:

A small cache located in the Old Durham Road Pioneer Cemetery, just east of Priceville, Ontario. I have now replaced this cache in a slightly different location, after the initial stage of rehabilitating this cemetery removed the cache and its hiding place. I'm hopeful this hiding place will remain in place through further rehabilitation efforts.

The Old Durham Road Pioneer Cemetary is located in part of the highest landscape in southwestern Ontario. Behind you the Saugeen River drains west to Lake Huron; in the small valley in front of you a tributary of the Beaver River drains northeast to Georgian Bay. Further southeast the Grand River drains south to Lake Erie. The entire region provides the 'headwaters' to major rivers of southwestern Ontario, flowing downhill in all directions from this highland. The Old Durham Road Cemetary itself is well worth highlighting. Restored by local citizens in the early 1990s, it originates from the mid-1800s when the pioneers first settled around Priceville. These particular pioneers were black settlers, ex-slaves and Loyalists, veterans of the War of 1812, who settled the area long before later Scots and Irish immigrants. The inscription on the stone rededicating the cemetary features the Hon. Lincoln Alexander, first black Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who I know well from his time as Chancellor at the University of Guelph. The cemetary is well-maintained, so watch for visitors, leave no trace of your visit, and take a moment to acknowledge the pioneers buried beneath your feet. If anyone else arrives, pretend to be just visiting the cemetary!
