Geocache Description:

NO MILK RUN

English text - see below.
Cache je venovana pamiatke letcov RAF, ktori zahynuli nedaleko. Stage1 vas zavedie k pamatniku venovanemu tejto smutnej udalosti.

(Ani jej lustenie asi nebude!)

Poznamka: V zargone spojeneckych posadok bombarderov sa vyraz MILK RUN (roznaska mlieka) pouzival na oznacenie naletov, pri ktorych bombardery nenarazali na ziadny, pripadne maly odpor protileteckej obrany.

Prvy problem bolo najst historicky sposob sifrovania britskych depesi.

Vylustenie tohto textu vam da suradnice Stage 1 a priblizne umiestnenie finalu.

Nastavenie prveho rotora zlava:
Air Marshall

Nastavenie druheho rotora:
Bombed city
Prve pismeno nazvu nemeckeho mesta, ktore bolo na konci 2. svetovej vojny takmer uplne znicene naletom. V noci z 13. na 14. 2. 45 zhodilo RAF 650.000 zapalnych bomb, spolu bolo pouzitych 2659 ton bomb. Zhorelo prakticky cele mesto.

Nastavenie tretieho rotora:
Reichsmarschall
Prve pismeno priezviska nemeckeho marsala, vrchneho velitela Luftwaffe.

Nastavenie stvrteho rotora:
GB Ace
Prve pismeno priezviska najlepsieho britskeho stihacieho pilota, ktory mal v 2. sv. vojne 38 potvrdenych zostrelov, vacsinou sa jednalo o zostrelene Messerschmitty BF109 a Focke Wulfy 190.

Nastavenie piateho rotora:
German Ace
Prve pismeno priezviska najlepsieho stihacieho pilota Luftwaffe, ktory mal do konca vojny 352 potvrdenych zostrelov. Bol clenom najuspesnejsej stihacej jednotky historie Jagdgeschwader JG52, ktora zostrelila 10.800 lietadiel.

Druhy rotor:
B24 over factory
Potrebujete zadat prve pismeno mesta, v ktorom v prizemnom lete bombardovali so strojmi B24 Liberator strategicky ciel.
B24 bombing run
Z 1726 clenov posadok bolo 300 muzov zabitych a 140 zajatych. Z tych, co doleteli naspat bolo 440 zranenych.

Treti rotor:
B17

Stvrty rotor:

Bomb
Pocas vojny vyvinuli vo Velkej Britanii specialne bomby, ktore dokazali znicit ciele, ktore uspesne odolavali konvencnym bombam.
Nastavte prve pismeno prveho slova nazvu tejto bomby. POZOR! Existovalo niekolko takychto bomb, vy musite najst nazov poslednej z nich.

Piaty rotor:
Nastavte prve pismeno krstneho mena pilota P-38 Lightning, ktory zahynul v roku 1944. Kvoli vysokemu veku mu najprv odmietali povolit lietat, nakoniec vsak nadriadenych presvedcil.

NO MILK RUN

Cache is made in memory of a crew of RAF bomber who died nearby. The stage 1 will lead you to a memorial of this event.

This cache is a continuance of cache Enigma which was renowned by seekers. We decided to add something to the theme and the preparation was everything but NO MILK RUN. Note: Allied air force crews used expression MILK RUN for a bombing run with a very little or no resistance from ground forces or enemy fighters.

The first problem was to find historical way of ciphering of British dispatches. After long research we found on the internet a simple emulator of an allied ciphering machine which works similarly to Enigma but it took some time to learn how to operate it as there was no help to it.

The first task for seekers will be to determine which ciphering machine was used. Hint: it was a Mark 22 with 5 rotors. Stage 1 will lead you to the memorial of RAF crew near Bratislava. 2 engine bomber was shot down on this place by a gunboat on the Danube (per unverified reports). There were items placed on the memorial we believe from survived members of the bomber crew.

Deciphering of this text will give you the coordinates of Stage 1 and rough spot of the final.

Setting up of the first rotor from left:

The first letter of the family name of a controversial air marshal of RAF which pushed a doctrine: Terror attacks against civilians could shorten the war. He supposed that killing civilians and eradicating cities will make citizens make a pressure on the government to end off the war. The history showed that the opposite was true. The nation was not broken by air attacks and the morale was even strengthened. The character of this officer is even more explained even more by the fact that he ordered to use a poisonous gas against rebellion of Iraqi tribes during 1930´s. It is very likely that if he would do the same in our time, from the today’s point of view he would be charged with the allegation of committing war crimes.

Second rotor:
Use the first letter of a German city which was almost entirely destroyed at the very end of WW2 in Europe by a bombing. At the night from 13th to 14th February 1945 RAF dropped 650.000 incendiary bombs. Together it was used 2659 tons of bombs. Almost the whole city was burned down. From the military viewpoint it is doubtful if this city was a valid military target the tragedy was worsened by the fact there were thousands of refugees from Silesia in the city. Some experts report that there were 250.000 casualties which is almost 3 times more than in Hiroshima.

Third rotor:
Use the first letter of the family name of a German marshal the head of Luftwaffe. This commandant was known by his praising statements which weren’t possible to keep and his reputation was getting worse and worse after Battle of Britain. He said that there will be no bomb falling on the Germany. But there was 1.996.036 tons of them… The photograph is from the earlier times. He was an exponent of Nazi regime and for the war crimes he was charged with death by hanging.

Fourth rotor:
Use the first letter of family name of the best British fighter ace who had in WW2 the highest number of confirmed kills – 38 mostly Messerschmitt BF 109s and Focke Wulf 190s. His plane was hit only once during his whole career. His specialty was to sneak behind his target. He fought also during Korean war on a F-86 Sabre.

Fifth rotor:
First letter of family name of the best Luftwaffe’s fighter pilot with 352 confirmed kills. he was the member of the best fighter squadron of the history JG52 with 10.800 kills. Russians hated them so much that they pushed US to give out the members of the squadron captured by US army. This fighter pilot was held POW until 1955.

The questions above can be resolved even by non-experts rather easily but deciphering of the following text will give you the final:

BKJHJ LNNUA TFOGE GAHWZ GZVZN FOQLT
LMION WKJUN GARFQ FTPOF GDCEV JHFCY
UHKXM IVFBH JTN

First rotor:
For the most of the people there will be surprising fact that the best Finnish ace achieved during WW2 94 kills. It is almost unbelievable that such a small nation like Finland could withstand quite successfully such a superpower like Soviet Union. Your task is to use the first letter of the family name of the best Finnish fighter pilot.

Second rotor:
Allied bombing runs required nerves made from steel because it was expected to complete 25 missions. In the beginning of the war there were about 8% losses. Just count 25x8=200 so mathematically it was almost impossible to succeed alive. There are cases known when the whole crew died during the very first mission.
You are supposed to use the first letter of a city which was bombed by low level flight by B-24 Liberator bombers attacking a strategic target.

For this mission there were 5 Medals of Honor awards which is utterly unusual number for just one mission (2 of them posthumously). Almost every aircraft was damaged by enemy fire. From 163 bombers which reached the target area returned to home base just 89. Another day only 33 B24s were considered as fit for the next action. From 1726 members of crew were 300 men killed and 140 became POW. From those who made it all way back there were 440 wounded.

Third rotor:
Many people have seen the film about Memphis Belle the famous Flying fortress B-17 which returned to US after completing 25 missions. But during the war there was even more famous B-17 and the whole squadron was named after her. She was the part of Mighty Eight – Eighth army USAF. Use the first letter of the name of this B-17 which in May 1943 was the firs who made the 25 missions but unlike the Memphis Belle continued the assignments. It was the only airplane which was able to withstand all the rough early days when there were no long range escorting fighters and the German fighters dominated the sky. It made 40 missions without any case of returning before completing the bombing run. There is also another record: No crew member of this plane was ever wounded or killed.

In December 1943 this B-17 made her last combat flight #48. Then on an event in Mollesworth England everybody signed her fuselage and with raised hands and tears in the eyes bade farewell to a plane heading home. Later there were bombers which could reach even more impressive records but none of them could do the same in the early stage of war.

Fourth rotor:
During WW2 there were bombs developed which could destroy the targets which were immune to conventional bombs. There were targets like battleship Tirpitz or bays for U-boots in Brest. Later there was even larger bomb: The body was casted in one piece from special hardened metal and the explosive Torpex was melted and filled in by hand. It required 30 days to cool it down. When dropped it reached speeds higher than Mach1 and when hitting the clay it penetrated over 130 feet and made a large cavern which made the target collapse even if there was not a direct hit.
Use the first letter of the first word of the name of this large bomb, the last one of its class developed during the WW2.

Fifth rotor:
Use the first letter of the first name of a P-38 Lightning pilot which was killed in 1944. Because of the age he was not allowed to fly as a pilot first but then he persuaded his seniors. From certain viewpoint he was the biggest loss of all killed P-38 pilots…
Hint: Night flight

Happy caching!
