Old Gad Road Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Sleuth: The Corps of Engineers has decided to make Salmon Run into a fee area. That is, you now have to pay a daily fee or purchase an annual pass to enjoy any of the activities - including geocaching - on this part of the Summersville Lake property. We don't believe that geocachers should have to pay for the privilege of looking for our caches, so we are taking down all of our hides - including this one - that are located in the new fee area. We apologize for any inconvenience this decision will cause. Thanks to all who have enjoyed hunting for and finding this one over the years!

Geocache Description:

A puzzle cache dedicated to Old Gad Road, and other abandoned, bypassed, and forgotten sections of roadway in Nicholas County, West Virginia.

Gad Road (County Route 9) was a highway that went from Keslers Cross Lanes, to the town of Gad, and on to U.S. Route 19 before the building of Summersville Lake in the late 1950's - early 1960's. The town of Gad was completely demolished and ceased to exist due to the lake construction. Some parts of Gad Road were bypassed, abandoned, or submerged beneath the lake. This cache is located near one of those abandoned sections of the old road.

The coordinates given above are for the parking area that's nearest the old section of road, which you must hike to look for the cache. To get the actual coordinates to the hiding place, you must solve the following puzzle:

N11° 22.333, W444° 55.666

The answers to the puzzle are taped inside six micro caches I put out along abandoned and bypassed sections of old U.S. Route 19, starting in the town of Birch River, 21 miles to the north, then coming back toward Summersville where the main cache is hidden. But, unlike the usual multi-cache, each of these is a stand-alone cache with its own listing on Geocaching.com. If you go for the six micros, plus this regular cache, you will get to log 7 finds instead of just one! The caches are called M.M.G. (for Magnetic Micro Grab) numbers 1 through 6. The answer to "N11°" in the coordinate puzzle is inside cache M.M.G. #1, the answer to "22." is inside cache M.M.G. #2, the answer to ".333" is inside cache M.M.G. #3, and so on...

Cache is in a 2.7 quart Lock & Lock container. Initial contents are: a Geocaching.com compass, toy dinosaur, wristband, personal battery-operated fan, fisherman's tool, hi-bouncing ball, bottle opener, change purse, toy car, hand warmer, letter opener, magic towel, 3 polished glass "gems", and a log book with pen.

I hope you have fun visiting, driving, and walking some of the nearly-forgotten roads of Nicholas County!
