7th
annual GGA Snake Presentation.
The August
meeting of the GGA will feature a return of one of our favorite
presentations -- The Snakes of Georgia. We'll throw in a few
insects too for fun.
Once again Dr.
Mark Patterson with the Georgia Herpetological Society will
entertain and inform us about some of the little creatures to look
out for while we're out Geocaching. We are grateful to have this
great presentation available to us once again this
year.
The meeting
will be held Saturday August 11, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at
the historic McDaniel Farm Park in Duluth, GA.
Whether your
encounter is with a Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Rattlesnake or other,
respect and avoidance is best.
A Black Widow Spider(left) bite gives the
appearance of a target, with a pale area surrounded by a red
ring. Severe muscle pain and cramps may develop in the first
two hours. Severe cramps are usually first felt in the back,
shoulders, abdomen and thighs. See the red hourglass?
What should you do if bitten? We'll cover that at the
meeting.
The Brown
Recluse Spider(right) bite usually causes some pain or burning
in the first 10 minutes, accompanied by itching. The wound takes on
a bull's-eye appearance, with a center blister surrounded by an
angry-looking red ring and then a blanched (white) ring. See the
violin? What is the treatment for a brown recluse spider bite?
We'll cover that at the meeting too.
So come out and learn what NOT to touch and
also what NOT to touch.
We hope to see you there!!!
