It was an Escort Mark III. And it was the first thing that we saw when we came to view our new house in Auchentiber. I've always romantically thought that it was an XR3. Adds a bit of class to the place, then, doesn't it? Our next door neighbour's daughter is now 22 and she cannot remember it ever not being there. Then, last month, driving back from Tesco, I noticed that it had gone. Well, not quite. There was still a trace of something.
Here, then, is Auchentiber's tribute to its lost beacon.
You can park either in the lay by at N55 41.279 W004 37.410, or off the road at N55 41.425 W004 36.892 . Watch out for the kerb, there - you need sturdy wheels. DO NOT PARK ON THE BEND. There is an ongoing local competition to see who can drive round it the fastest.
Whichever way you go, you'll have to bushwhack a bit. Wear sturdy boots and watch out for unexpected deep boggy bits. In a wet winter it could get quite difficult. You might also see why the council kerbed the second lay by.
When you get to ground zero, you'll see what happens when you leave something like this undisturbed for 20 years.
