Doctor's Peace Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a small disguised container (not too unusual) hidden in a quiet spot near to Willenhall town centre. Parking (on street) is available near to the cache location.
It is a requirement, per Groundspeak rules, to sign the logbook to claim the find; the gates to the area may be locked overnight, so please bear that in mind when you visit.
In 1849, over a period of just 49 days, 292 people from Willenhall died as a result of a cholera outbreak.
The nearby St. Gile's (a short walk over the main road, and worth a visit) didn't have enough space to deal with this number of deaths, and so a small piece of the church estate (at the time unconsecrated) was used for these burials. A total of 211 people were buried here, and the small garden where this cache is hidden remains with a monument (the original, now in a poor state), and a replacement to mark the deaths of these people.
The ground was consecrated on 18th July 1867.
Also in the grounds there are two further memorials; the first is a memorial to the wife of John Frederick Seyde (1810-1899, and also buried here), Grace Lamond, who died in 1870. JF Seyde was a chemist in the town, though I am unsure of the link to the cholera garden.
The other stone is dedicated to Private L Jones of the Royal Army Medical Corps (service number 64022), who died on 11th August 1915. His christian name was Luke, but I can't find any more information about him at present.
The cache itself is hidden in the garden. Entry to the garden is through the gate, which is unlocked during daylight hours.
Please take care to make sure the cache is fully covered when you replace it.
The cache has been replaced after being reported missing, so is smaller than the original - it is not big enough for most trackable items in its current form; we are monitoring it to see if we can make it bigger, but after many years, the cache has gone missing twice in reasonably quick succession, and we don't want to be party to losing any valuable bugs.
