A Short History of Shipham
Shipham used to be a sheep farming hamlet and appeared in the
Doomsday Book (1086) with land for six ploughs, 200 acres of
meadow, 200 acres of pasture, 10 acres of underwood, one cow and 26
sheep! In the 16th century miners from other areas moved in and
made a far better living than the sheep farmers until the 19th
century when all the veins had been worked out. Gruffy Ground is
the local name for a patch of land covered in holes where this
open-cast mining took place. There then followed a period of
intense poverty. Today Shipham is largely a commuter village with a
fair proportion of retired people. The recently built, excellent
Village Hall provides many activities and the village supports a
play school, a primary school, 2 garages, 2 pubs, a shop and
butchery and a non-profit making cafe called Lenny's. Enjoy the
walk.
