Geocache Description:

A short hike in from Platt Clove Road on the Long Path.

The Old Overlook Road Cache is a sandwich sized lock-n-lock container hidden just off of the Long Path in the Platt Clove Preserve. There is parking for a few cars at the trailhead, and more parking just down the road at the DEC parking area. The trail leading across the southern portion of the Preserve has always followed the old Overlook Road, built in the 1800s to access bluestone quarries and Catskill hotels, now a new footpath is used that bypasses a long section of the old road that was suffering from severe erosion. This new trail is part of the Long Path, which is a partnership project with the NY/NJ Trail Conference. The footbridge by the trailhead is a handmade re-creation of a kingpost bridge that once spanned Plattekill Creek in the same spot over 100 years ago. There are also some interpretive and tree ID signs along the Preserve trails. The hike to the cache is less than 0.25 mile and is a slight elevation gain. Further down the trail, just over the State boundary, about 0.5 miles from Platte Clove Road, there is a large bluestone quarry where hikers have piled up slabs of bluestone into a small kingdom of thrones, towers, and tables. Further down is the Devils Kitchen Lean-to and Rocky Lounge cache which is at another old bluestone quarry.
