“INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just two years, the quest has grown
to over four hundred fifty caches hidden in Indiana, as well as
Ohio and Michigan, and the hiders have grown to over twenty-five
cacher teams, most of which of which are comprised of Dogs and
their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams have logged over 12,000
finds. One of many cache machines found 102 ISQ caches in a single
day (daylight hours only).

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#569
"Denny's, Not
Lenny's!"
This is Vigo County's FIRST OFFICIAL Indiana Spirit
Quest!
This quest will take you to Denny Cemetery
located approx. 1.5 miles east of US 41 on Hastleburger Road. The
cemetery is located in northern Vigo County, within Otter Creek
Township. It was started around 1812 (note the date on the
entrance) by Terre Haute "Hoosier Pioneers" such as William Denny,
David Lyon, A. M. Ostrander, William Johnson, Thomas White, Anthony
Creal, Isaac and Jacob Balding, and Abraham Markle. The township
has recently revamped the decaying wall around the cemetery, but
has kept it as close to original as possible. They also do a great
job of upkeep on this old cemetery as you will see. Be careful when
opening the gates at the entrance as they are not in the best
condition, but they do still function. Also, parking for this
cemetery is not the greatest. Please use the parking coordinates
provided, which will basically put you just east of the entrance on
the cemetery side of the road.
**Special thanks to Lynn of the ICQ Cache
Crew for helping me with some research on this
cache!**
There is only one soldier buried in this
small cemetery; his name was Mortimer Denny. He was a resident of
Roseville, Indiana, and was born at some time in 1837 to Rebecca
Depew. He enlisted into the Union Army as a 1st Lieutenant on
August 15, 1862. He was commissioned to Company G, of the 85th
Infantry Regiment Indiana on September 2, 1862. He fought in the
war for almost 2 years until he met his untimely demise in the
shadow of Kenisaw Mountain where he was mortally wounded on June
29, 1864. He finally succumb to those wounds on August 16, 1864. He
was never married, and his mother drew his pension after his
death.
