Geocache Description:

Sunningdale Loop Trail

A pleasant hike from the Miral Heights residential area of Trail to the Sunningdale area of Trail. Good views of Trail, the Columbia River, the Cominco smelter and the mountains to the West (Red Mountain ski area) and South. This trail is best done as a crossover trip with bikes or a second car at the Sunningdale end. It is 5 Km (3.1 Mi.) from Miral Heights to the bike parking place and 160 Metres (520 Ft.) Elevation gain. The trail starts up an old road which takes you to a lookout point over the Cominco smelter. A short distance South of this point is a flag pole. To leave the road and walk the trail to the cache go back to the J3 yellow tape waypoint and find the trail going North from there. The trail goes along the rock ledge overlooking Sunningdale and the Columbia river.

The geocache is a side trip uphill from the main trail. The cache is an ammo box at the base of a Pine conifer tree. It is not a Ponderosa Pine. Can someone tell me what species the tree is?

The trail is marked by dozens of stone cairns many of which are feats of creative rock balance.

Watch for the J8 waypoint. It would be easy to miss the small trail that goes down at this point. The main trail goes on for a long way.

There is a pond past the end of the trail to the cache. It is a stagnant pool. It only has water in it in winter and spring. If you like to see nature's green, this the place to go in the spring (April). It is the greenest place in the W Kootenays in season.

Initial contents of cache:

1. 4 x toy whistles
2. compass
3. 4 x novelty heart plastic straws
4. elastic 6 foot camping clothesline with 6 pegs
5. leather gloves
6. pkg inflating needles
7. wilderness signal whistle
8. 10 x hiker108 cards
9. log book and pencil

Enjoy the views.
