This cache is located just off Route 2 at Wilcox Hollow which is a popular spot for the locals to fish, swim and tube the Deerfield River but often unknown to others. There you will walk the Mahican Mohawk Trail to find the cache.
The Mahican Mohawk trail follows the Deerfield River and can be rocky, muddy and steep in some places. At one spot on the trail you will come to a fence, you do have to cross over the fence and continue on the Mahican Mohawk Trail to find the cache. Please obey the Posted No Trespassing Signs and stay on the trail.
Parking at Wilcox Hollow:
From Route 2 west, about a mile east of the turnoff for Shelburne Falls, watch on the left for a gray sign with ''Wilcox Hollow" in red letters. Turn left down a one-lane dirt road. Follow to a parking area at the end. (There will also be a parking area in a field on the right before the end for a nearby trail).
A bit of history about the Mahican Mohawk Trail:
The Mahican-Mohawk Trail is located in the northwest portion of Massachusetts and is approximately 50 miles long. Thousands of years ago native peoples used this route as a primary east to west trade route. Early settlers also used this route, and today automobiles run parallel to this historic trail. This trail connects the Appalachian Trail with the proposed Connecticut River Heritage Trail, from Mount Greylock in North Adams east to Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Mohawk Trail is a significant link because it preserves an important historic trail and provides hikers the opportunity to travel from mountain ridge to river's edge. The following organizations have worked on this trail proposal; Appalachian Mountain Club, Deerfield River Watershed Association, Franklin County Commissions, Friends of the Mohawk Trail State Forest, Hoosic River Watershed Association.
Also hidden on the trail is KingJayden's Secret Stash cache (GC14RJ6). KingJayden is our 7-year-old nephew and it was his first time hiding a cache.
Have fun, be safe and enjoy!!
