Geocache Description:

This is another one of our favourite walks in Newlands Forest that we’d like to share with you. What is so nice about this walk is that you can do it in almost any weather. In summer you’re protected from the harsh sun and in winter the forest forms a protective canopy to protect you from everything but the worst wind and rain.

Since this is a fairly long (and strenuous) walk we don’t want you to get lost on the myriads of paths in the forest, so provided you with some waypoints to guide you. Allow for at least 45 minutes to the cache if you’re relatively fit; more if you rest often on the way up.

As there is a lot of tree cover here none of the waypoints are critical; you’ll be able to find your way to the cache even if your GPSr is having difficulty in getting a good signal.

Park at S33 58.263 E018 26.995 and make your way to S33 58.097 E18 26.644 (and very close to Discombob’s “In the pipeline”).
From here head up the path in a NW direction. At S33 58.021 E18 26.531 if you look closely you’ll find a path crossing the river. After crossing it continue going up,up. At S33 58.044 E18 26.415 you’ll come to a junction where you need to turn in a SE direction. (You’re now on Woodcutter’s trail. Going the other direction will take you to a cache by the same name). Continue on this path until you end up on “the old jeep track” at S33 58.087 E18 26.438. You can either go up following the jeep track or take the steep short-cut to the next waypoint
At S33 58.052 E18 26.235 the jeep track ends. Now for the last (very steep!) climb to the contour path. At S33 58.012 E18 26.163 you’ll find pure ice cold refreshing mountain dew. Go on have some! Almost there. Head in a Northern direction on the contour path. When walking here one appreciates how much effort is put in by the Table Mountain National Park staff to maintain the forest!

Even if your GPSr is not getting a good signal here you’ll know when you arrived at the cache location. Look out for what we call the “picnic spot”. After finding the cache (small trade items only), sit here for a while and enjoy the forest. Isn’t it stunning?

Cache started with the usual: Cache note, Notebook & Pen, miscellaneous goodies.
