James had spent most of his life working on the railway. Normally he very much enjoyed himself, but today was different and he felt quite sad. He'd heard that there was a city across the sea where lots of the railway tracks were no longer used by trains. James had even started to feel angry when he was told that the tracks had been pulled up and replaced by tarmac! As he was contemplating this dreadful end, a group of his friends came along.
"Hello James, why are you looking so miserable?" asked Percy.
"I was thinking about the disused railways over in Edinburgh," came the sad reply.
"I heard about that," added Toby. "But then I spoke to Donald and he told me that it's not as bad as it seems."
"Yes," said Percy as he tried to cheer up his friend. "Even though the tracks do get pulled up and replaced with tarmac, once that's happened people use them for cycling and running and walking their dogs as there are no cars or lorries allowed on the disused railway."
"I even heard that geocachers have been making good use of the disused railways," said Henry.
"Geocachers? What's that then?" asked Thomas.
"Well, it's a bit hard to explain, but I'll see what I can do," replied Henry. "It's all to do with satellites, the internet and hiding boxes full of cheap trinkets."
"Pah!" exclaimed Donald. "Satellites and boxes of trinkets? Sounds daft to me!"
"I think there's more to it than that," said Toby. "If you just let him finish..."
"Anyway it's a bit immaterial," interrupted Edward, getting the last word as usual. "I hear the disused railways are going to be turned into tramways, which is almost as good as being a railway again!"
And with that they all went back to their work on the railway, feeling a little bit happier than before.
