A challenging hike to the summit of Owl's Head Mt. in the town of Long Lake. Approximately 3.2 miles one-way, and 1060 feet of elevation on some rough trail. Plan on 4 hours total. (Third in a series of Owl's Head Mt. caches. Look for the other 2 along the way!)
Cache is an ammo container hidden at the summit of Owl's Head Mountain in the Sargent Ponds Wild Forest. It's not usually crowded at the summit, but try not to be observed.
Located near the head of Long Lake, Owl's Head Mountain provides scenic views of the Fishing Brook Range with the High Peaks in the distance and Blue Mt. to the SE. While the view is well worth the effort, there are some steep stretches which can be very difficult. This is especially true near the summit.
HISTORY: The first Owls Head Fire Tower was a wooden structure with open platform erected and staffed in 1911 in response to a disastrous series of forest fires. The current 35’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7’x7’ metal cab was constructed by the NYS-DEC in 1919 and staffed until 1970. In 2003 the DEC and Friends of Owl Head Fire Tower restored the lookout and it is again open for hikers.
