This is Oxbow's first mystery cache. It is also a multi-cache. You can drive up to all four locations. Hope you enjoy it.
The coordinates above give you the starting point. From there drive east until you see a crosswalk. Park on Main Street and face north. Based on what you see in front of you, you must match 6 numbers with 6 letters. The letters and their corresponding numbers are:
K = number of horses pulling something
W = number of people riding horses
M = number of letters in the painters' names divided by the number of passenger train cars completely covered overhead with smoke
N = number of windows in white buildings south of the tracks
I = number of different animals (look carefully)
A = number of wheels visible on train engine and coal car
Now look for a business sign nearby that has the same 6 letters at the beginning of its name. Write the letters down in the order they appear in the name and write the corresponding numbers down in the same order. The first 3 digits go in the North coordinate and the last 3 digits go in the West coordinate.
Location 3 is at 49° 13.XXX N and 102° 10.XXX W
When you reach this location, look for an object that is not in its original position. Find the name of the city and state where this object was manufactured. The letters in that name plus the letters in the state abbreviation give you 10 distinct letters that match the digits 0 to 9. You just need to figure out what pattern I used to match them. To help you with this, I will give you 4 clues. First you need to know how to find a digit sum. Add the digits of a number together and if the answer is more than 1 digit, repeat the process until you have only 1 digit. For example, the digit sum of 9374 is 5. Now for the 4 clues:
1. Find the digit sum of the date the object was made. This number is represented by the letter I
2. Find the digit sum of the date the object was placed in its present position. This number is B.
3. Add the above 2 dates and find the digit sum of the answer. This number is L (those of you with a mathematical bent will notice a certain connection between the sums you have calculated so far).
4. Subtract the 2 dates and the last digit of the answer represents the letter T.
Write down the digits from 0 to 9 and put the 4 letters you know in their respective positions. Hopefully you will see the pattern.
The final location is at IT° BE.ORE N and BAD° BA.LTI W
These coordinates take you to the corner of a private lot where you will have to find a well hidden micro. The micro contains easy directions to the actual, nearby cache and the combination for the lock on that cache.
Some stealth is suggested at this final location. Although the owners are aware of the cache, if you are spotted by the female you will have to admire her flower garden and may be forced to eat some of her baking. The male is even more dangerous as you will be subjected to watching various yo-yo tricks from which he will expect enthusiastic praise.
Orignial contents of the cache include:
A new Fast 201 yo-yo with extra string.
A gold Saskcachers 2007 geocoin. (Just came out in July)
An electronic stopwatch
A North Dakota State Fair coin (given as a prize at their virtual geocaching event)
A Swan River 75th anniversay coin
A SE Cornerstone SD pin
