Located in Strathcona Provincial Park near Woods Mountain Ski Park
The Mount Becher Trail is a great choice for a day hike. A good, well defined trail leads from the site of the burnt-out Plateau Ski Lodge to Mount Becher (approx 9 Km return). Park at N49 39.662 W125 09.795 (19 Km from Courtenay).
From the cache site, the geocacher/hiker can continue to climb the trail to the top of Mt Becher, approx 20 minutes further on. From here, there are absolutely spectacular views of Vancouver Island and Georgia Strait.
The cache is located near the old Becher Cabin, built in 1929 and used until the 1950s. It was built by members of the Comox District Mountaineering Club and it became a destination cabin for skiers. This cache is a memorial and a tribute to Sid Dauncey (1913 - 2005), who was a member of the CDMC and who loved the Forbidden Plateau and Becher Mountain areas. Sid enjoyed many happy times at the Becher cabin, and was especially proud of the "sky-high" outhouse that he built to be above the winter snow pack. Later, in his retirement, Sid became a supervisor of the Forbidden Plateau Ski Patrol.
After the 1950s, Becher cabin fell into disrepair. Currently, some remnants of the cabin are still visible.
When placed, the cache contained a radio, a buzz bomb fishing lure, a Willow Leaf fishing lure, a package of golf tees, a compass, and the log book.
