Geocache Description:

At the entrance to Cathedral Pines Campground in Eustis, Maine.

Pull into the parking area near the main road and read the plaques on the three rocks, then the four signs that hang between granite posts. After that you will know much about the history of this area: Benedict Arnold's ill-fated march on Quebec City during the Revolutionary War and the flooding of the town of Flagstaff to create the lake you are looking at. (To learn more about Arnold's march to Quebec, read Kenneth Robert's book Arundel). Find the cache. Then drive into the campground, to the public picnic area on the right. There are fireplaces to cook on, picnic tables and a sign on a tree points the way to the restrooms (outhouses). Then drive or walk, following the signs, to the public beach where you can swim until 9:00 PM during the campground season (May to October). Near the beach there are changing rooms for the public, a grassy area to play ball, more picnic tables and swings for the children. Not to mention a beautiful sandy beach, swimming dock and spectacular views of the Bigelow Range. You are also allowed to walk or bicycle the roads through the campsites. There is no free camping but all the public areas are free. In the winter the roads become cross country ski trails. If you like night caching, check out the campground facilities by day and come back after dark to find the cache and read the last sign at the entrance which is the poem "Driving To Dark Country" by Wesley McNair. "Great trees will rise up to see you passing by, all by yourself, riding on light". Would be especially nice with a full moon over the Bigelows.
