Geocache Description:

Explore the world of hydro energy

The Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme is one of six stations in the Peaking Generation stable and is situated in the magnificent mountains of the northern Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal.

Throughout the planning and construction phases, protection and rehabilitation of the environment formed an integral part of the project.

What makes this station unique, is that apart from the dam wall, lift shaft buildings and transmission lines, all installations are 150 meters underground. Drakensberg's four reversible turbines, situated 50 storeys below ground level, generate 1000MW onto the Eskom grid during peak periods.

Four and a half kilometres of water pipes link the upper and lower reservoir.
The power station has 4 x 250 MW machines.
In generating mode, water travels at a maximum of 70m/s to the lower reservoir.
In pump mode, water is transferred at 50m/s per machine to the upper reservoir.

The Visitor Centre Offers:

A interactive exhibition on Eskom and Drakensberg
A well equipped auditorium. Staff members introduce visitors to Eskom, the Generation Group and Drakensberg by means of a slide show and informative presentations. The presentation also covers the joint venture between the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry and Drakensberg in the transfer of water from the Tugela River to the Vaal Dam
A guided tour of this unique power station.
