Oh Well! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mapperist: A maintainer came by and covered up the cache. That, combined with the fact that the cache's caretaker will be moving away, leads me to archiving the cache. Thanks to everyone who found the cache - happy exploring!

Geocache Description:

Congratulations to RED250 on her FTF!!!

Location of the first well of Bailey County.

Dug by hand in 1909 on farm of Willard Burns. A pit well (large enough for workmen to enter), it measured 6 by 10 feet across and 15 feet deep. A 10-inch centrifugal pump removed 1,000 gallons of water per minute. Upon its completion, settlers from miles around gathered to hold a "water carnival", which became a local custom whenever wells were dug. Hundreds of such wells made agriculture profitable in this low rainfall area. Well and pump were abandoned when turbine pumps came into use, 1920s. No signs of it remain. (1972)

I grew up (well, the first seven years of my life) a mile west of here on 1760. I also have family that live a half mile south of here. I just found out that the well was on what is now family property. The cache isn't meant to be hard and it should be a nice easy cache and dash. Because I live in Colorado Springs a family member will be taking care of this cache, replacing the log, and what not. The cache does have a pen but it might be a good idea to BYOP!
