Geocache Description:

This Earthcache is not for the weak of heart and involves a lenghty hike with large elevation changes on the way in and the way out!

This gorge typifies the Bay of Fundy coastal area between Saint John and Alma, NB. The gorge has cut it’s way deep into the bedrock producing a steep gorge with a change of elevation of 150m. This area contains an estuary boasting high biological productivity. The area contains fresh water of Little Salmon River, estuarine water, and salt water of the Bay of Fundy. Several very interesting geological formations are found here.

In cases like this gorge, small cirque glaciers and larger valley glaciers flow along pre-existing river valleys, widening and deepening the valley. In some cases the glacier cuts through a mountain range, forming a col or gap.

DO NOT BUSHWHACK TO THIS CACHE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

The Salmon River Gorge is one of the most spectacular places in the entire province. The gorge itself is a fantastic place to hike, swim and even camp.

Thousands of years have passed since the formation of the gorge by glaciers, and this earthcache takes you to one of the major scenes of the evidence of the glacial movement. As well, you will get a true sense of the enormity and power of glaciers when standing at the bottom of the cliffs.

Please follow these instructions to approach the cache location safely!!!
In order to get to this location, you are best served to park at the trail head, very near to cache GCQ638 - Fundy Footpath- The Way In. From here you will follow the trail, which is 3 kilometres or so, and involves a long and winding downward climb. The trail down will take you past GC14YN3 and GC14Z3C. At the bottowm of your descent, you can grab GCQ63A as well, before following the Dustin Brook out to the Little Salmon River.

Once you reach the river, there will be several crossings necessary to reach the site of the earth cache, which is approximately one kilometre upstream.

The gorge may play havock with your reception, but if you follow the stream, you cannot miss the cliffs. The cliffs are found approximately 200-300 metres downstream from GCQ633.

Once at the cliffs, please perform the following tasks.
Do not log a find until permission is received from the owner. Failure to comply with any parts of the earthcache will result in deletion of logs!

1)Take a photo of yourself with gps is hand with the cliffs in the background. As this is not a hike to be done solo, you should have someone there to take it for you! Post this picture with your log after receiving permission.

2)Estimate the height of the cliffs and email your estimate to the cache owner.
3)Look at the striations in the cliff (more visible near the bottom). Which direction was the glacier moving when it carved out this section of the gorge?

Remember to e-mail resonses to the owner before logging the find.

Enjoy!!
