A bunch of the boys were whooping it up

in the Rhino Club Saloon

The piano was not silent, it was playing a rag time tune.

It was way up there in Lynden, that wild north border town.

The place is party city, and no one wears a frown.

The drink was flowing steady, the atmosphere was great.

And over at the pool table, the shark sank number eight.

I talked to the man in the spats and the tall silk hat.

I asked why he was idle, and where his music was at.

"Oh, I do not play the piano, Sir, I almost never do.

For I am just the organist

At reformed church number two."

The lamps were almost going out,

So the barmaid trimmed their wicks.

I counted very closely, and found that there were six.

I watched the man that was playing cards,

He held them closely to his vest.

He growled very angrily: "If I do not win this game,

Then I am heading West."

The server set down a bottle, it looked very fine.

I looked closely at the label; it said potion number nine.

I took a tiny sip and suddenly felt great.

The chorus girls were dancing.

I counted - there were eight.

I was feeling very wonderful, almost like a hero.

And when I try to rhyme this line -

The word it would be zero.

My lemonade was hard to drink;

It came in a screw top peanut jar.

If you really try to rhyme that line

Then you won't get too far.

I went over to the fortune teller, her name was Gramma K.

I listened very closely, and this is what she had to say.

"If you do not get the numbers that you want,

then go out into a clearing.

The sky is very bright there,

the results will be most cheering.

Then walk back to the forest,

and walk 90 paces to the east.

Where the woodsman made his mark,

there your eyes will feast.

As you walk along the roadway, obey the traffic rule.

If you don't stay unto the right, then you will be a fool.

Across the road from where the axe-man made a slash,

If you look behind a tree, then you will find a cache."

So I got up from my chair, and went upon my way.

The treasure is still hidden,

but it can be found - they say.

I am not so wise as the lawyer guys,

but just between us two.

The ones that find this treasure box

will indeed be very few.

And as I sit and pen these lines, I get so very nervous:

Although I might get tarred and feathered in Lynden -

I am still not Robert Service.
