Geocache Description:

The cache is near the top of Baylor Pass. An elevation of about 6400 ft.

Baylor Pass gets its name from Lt. Col. John R. Baylor who tried to capture all of the New Mexico and Arizona territory for the Confederacy in 1861. The Union forces surrendered near by at San Augustin Pass. However by 1862 the Confederacy was forced to retreat to Texas.

Hidden in Baylor Pass, the Booty includes a whistle, disposable camera, campers flashlight, NM flag patch, and a book, "Rebels on the Rio Grande". To reach the Booty from the west, take the Baylor Canyon Road south, go .4 miles beyond the paved road, and park in the Baylor Pass Trail parking area. The hike is approximately 3 miles, with a gain of 1,500' in altitude. To approach from the east, go to the Aguirre Springs Recreation Area and follow the Baylor Pass Trail. This approach is approximately 2.5 miles, with a 1,200' gain in altitude. The entrance fee for the Aguirre Springs area is three dollars a vehicle.

The booty is almost due north of where the trail crosses the saddle. Look for a cluster of 3 bushes, a Spanish Sword and a Cholla around a large rock. Cache is in a small ammo box (5.5 x 8.5 x 2) hidden under a bush and wedged between some large rocks.

Take a generous amount of water for this hike and be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and cougars year-around!
