Find-a-Finch Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Balayang: I am regretfully archiving this cache since unfortunately there has been no action to restore it, or any communication from the cache owner, way-finder, requesting additional time.

An ample opportunity has been provided for the Cache Owner to respond, but since this opportunity has been ignored, I can only conclude that the cache has been abandoned.

Caches archived under these circumstances are unable to be Unarchived, and this location is now available for the placement of a new cache, by somebody else.

Geocache Description:

Find-a-Finch is one of many caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - "the longest geocache trail in the world".

G'day Geocachers,
Find-a-Finch cache is located on a spendid 'breakaway' landform near an impressive gnamma (water) hole to the north of the Outback Way. It is one of many water holes used by Aboriginal people as they moved through the landscape. The road alignment still follows a similar pathway. Much can still be learned from the Aboriginal custodians of this land.
Animals also rely on the water holes to survive.

Activity: As you near the cache coordinates, stop, look and listen. Where there is water, there is likely to be a flock of zebra finches. They will lead you to the water. Can you spot the finches? They are small stocky grey birds, the males have an orangeish patch on the face and all have black and white zebra dots and bars on the underside and tail. They move quickly and are hard to photograph. What other animals live here? Can you find their scats?
Once you have found the cache and water hole, enjoy the view to the west. The savannah landscape is vast. What do you think creates the diverse patterns in the landscape? Look at the many shapes, colours and textures in the vegetation and soil. Very special!
