Historical Landmark - GORDON'S FERRY ON THE KERN RIVER
Gordon's Ferry was an overhead cable-type of ferry operated during the 1850s by Major Gordon. An adobe station house was located on the south bank of the Kern River, just a few yards to the west of this marker, which also served as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route from 1856 to 1860.
In 1852, about eight months after Gordon started his ferry business, rain fell for three weeks across California. Damage to Gordon's Ferry is not known, but according to Jose Jesus Lopez, early pioneers said that the flood "swept the location perfectly bare of all signs of improvements." During the Kern River and Greenhorn gold rushes, Gordon Ferry probably received only modest traffic, but the location could have remained profitable as a trading post. The Tulare Franchise Book shows that Gordon paid tax on the ferry through 1857, but a decrease in traffic might have caused him to leave. About 1858, Gordon established a trading post for freighters on the Los Angeles-Fort Tejon road in San Franciscito Canyon, however Gordon might have settled there somewhat earlier
