Picklesimer Rockhouse Falls Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

slackpacker: I don't 'cache like I used to, so picking up these containers when I'm in the area. This is a really cool spot, I hope that folks enjoyed seeing the cave and falls. This cache was out there for ten years - time to free-up the spot for someone else. Thanks to all that visited - happy 'caching!

Geocache Description:

A short hike to a small - but fairly high - waterfall that spills over a massive cave/overhang.

"Rockhouse" is a term used to describe natural formations - caves and large rock overhangs - that could be used for shelter. There are several in this area - think of the shallow caves behind Bridal Veil Falls and Dry Falls - and there are stories of early settlers, civil war soldiers, and Native Americans using these structures.

What is really neat about this rockhouse is not the waterfall - the stream is actually quite small - but rather the sheer size of the cave that it tumbles over. As you approach the falls, you'll see a great yawning blackness through the forest - the cave/overhang is probably 50 ft high, 50 ft deep, and 200 feet wide.

To get there, you have a choice; the easiest way (of course!) is to drive to the closest trailhead. To reach it, take Hwy 28 south from the intersection with Main St. in Highlands for exactly 6 miles to a "Blue Valley" forest service sign on the right; turn onto this road, and travel 4.3 miles to the parking coords (given below). Across from the parking area is a Forest Service road; start hiking up this road, go straight through a small clearing, and reenter the woods. In just a minute you'll come to a small stream; don't cross the stream, but look for a small trail to the right, and follow it to the falls. You will not need to bushwhack at all. Total hike, roundtrip, is maybe 1.25 miles.

The alternative is to hike down from Glen Falls - hard to believe with all that driving, but the cache is only 1.5 miles from the Glen Falls trailhead (off Hwy 106, coords, below). The Glen Falls trail, if taken to the bottom, dumps out on a forest service road that, within a half mile, intersects with the route described above. Would be about a 5-mile hike roundtrip, but would pass by the Glen Falls #1 and Glen Falls #2 caches. Your choice!

You are looking for a medium lock-n-lock container, starting life full of new good stuff. The coords should be good, but the overhang can play havoc with the signal, so take along the hint to narrow your search, if needed.

Enjoy!
