Geocache Description:

You can find the cache near the Széplak pilgrims' chapel in the outskirts of Cikó village.

Széplak pilgrimage (HU: GCSZBR)
You don’t find Széplak town in the maps today. The mediaval Széplak town disappeared because of systemic devastations carried by Turkish agressors in the course of islam occupation that was on historical Hungary’s south parts 1541-1688. Only the ruins of the sanctuary of the 12th century Roman style big church of Széplak (of the age of the Árpáds) remained.
This ruin is a place of pilgrimage of many centuries on 15th August (day of Ascension of Virgin Mary) and 8th September (date of birth of Virgin Mary) because of many miraculous convalescences.

History of Cikó village
The inhabitants of Cikó also became extinct in the course of Osmanli occupation. German immigrants lived here since beginning 1700s. They were expulsioned following the Second World War. Bukovina Csangos live here now since 1946.

Who are Csangos?
Csangos are Hungarian ethnic groups those live outside of historic Hungary (it was the whole Carpathian Basin up to end of the First World War).
Most of Csangos (csángó) live in Roumania in Bacau county; they didn’t settle in Hungary in the course of Hungarian Reconquest (A.D.896) they are the „Moldova Csangos”. They speak medieval Hungarian dialect.
The origin of Bukovina Csangos is different from Moldova Csangos.
They emigrated to the depopulated Bukovina from Tansylvania in 1764. but totally are repatriated by this time. They live also in Cikó.
