Kennewick Man Traditional Cache

tumbleweed2: It is with great sadness that I must archive this cache, Kennewick Man. The location has greatly overgrown with pokey Russian Olive trees, and there is no suitable location anywhere near this spot to safely place a cache. I was thrilled when I placed it to be able to find a location near where the Kennewick Man remains were actually found.

Geocache Description:

On July 28, 1996 two young men encountered a human skull along the banks of the Columbia River at Kennewick, Washington, during the Hydroplane Water Follies Races. More bones were discovered of an almost complete skeleton of an ancient man. After much study, it was determined "that this was a male of late middle age (40-55 years), and tall (170 to 176 cm ), slender build. He had suffered numerous injuries, the most severe of which were compound fractures of at least 6 ribs and apparent damage to his left shoulder musculature, atrophy of the left humerus due to the muscle damage, and the healing projectile wound in his right pelvis. The lack of head flattening from cradle board use, minimal arthritis in weight-bearing bones, and the unusually light wear on his teeth distinguish the behavior and diet of Kennewick Man from that of more recent peoples in the region."

There is a display panel about Kennewick Man, along the trail in the Audubon Society Trail area, a bit more to the East here in Columbia Park.

There are many websites dealing with this discovery and the ensuing controversy over just who this Ancient One belonged to and where he should ultimately spend eternity. The 6-8 year custody battle finally ended and allowed scientific study of the 9,300 year old bones. The National Park Service has this report: http://www.nps.gov/archeology/kennewick/. Cache is an ammo can.

To find the log book, you have to "get into" Kennewick man's mind.

update 9-24-09----Kennewick man's skull is no longer in the ammo can. Apparently someone thought it was a trade item, so it has moved on, toward Boise, I understand.

Update, July 2012
It appears that someone has "Kidnapped" Kennewick man again. The skull in the container WAS Kennewick man, and was NOT swag. Someone keeps taking the skull.

Update 12-20-12 This location has been found repeatedly by muggles who take the skull and logbook, but leave the ammo can. Please DO NOT LEAVE TRACKABLES HERE. It is not safe for them.

Update 2015, No longer under the tree. A homeless or teen has taken up residence there.
