Geocache Description:

Yes my friend, there are gators in ALLIGATOR CREEK!

"Alligator Creek lived up to its name this past Tuesday when a 19-year-old maintenance worker for the Starke Recreation Department, said he was bitten by an alligator while mowing near the creek behind the Edwards Road Complex. "It just jumped out of no where and got a hold of me," he said. He fortunately, only had a few, small scratches on his right leg to show for the encounter, which left him with a shredded boot and pants leg. "I'm really fortunate," he said. "Evidently, I have a guardian angel looking out for me." This is an excerpt from a story that ran in the August 2, 2007 edition of the Bradford County Telegraph. The week following the printing of this article a cacher that isnt local to the area told me about how he was scoping out an area to place a cache just up creek from the scene of the attack on the rec. department employee not knowing of this recent encounter. As he was just getting down into/near to the creek to look at a location that he thought would be good, he found out that he wasnt the only one that liked that location. Luckily he was able to get back up the embankment before the gator could get to him. Being local I got a pretty good laugh out of this story, I have grown up in this area and have many times heard the stories of how big gators were that have been pulled out of the creek over the years. I also must add that this is the only time I can recall there actually being any documented encounters with them. I have played in the creek many times over the years, friends and myself would follow the creek through the woods after school just to get to Taco Bell for a bite to eat. We would often swim in multiple locations in it and have never seen a gator. But I guess its because we didnt have a lawn mower or a GPS at the time...go figure! But seriously, safety is a big issue and this cache will not take you close enough to the creek to have your own close encounter. The location that I have chosen has a big embankment and is across the road from the area the cacher was in. For more information on alligators, please visit the Web site www.myfwc.com/gators. To report a bite, call the nuisance alligator hotline at (866) 392-4286. You are seeking an ammo can. It is placed in a highly visible area during waking hours. Other than that, it will be an easy find.
