Geocache Description:

The cache has been replaced by a larger container.

Many years ago, before the current trail system was established I used to bushwhack all over Bong. This solitary oak was one of my favorite places to hike to. At the time it was the largest tree around here as the willows and box elders were not present at that time. The grass that grew here was also shorter, more like that found to the west of the ditch you crossed to get here. Just to the east of the ditch there is another stand of oaks, which was the site of a fox den. There is also an old apple tree to south of the oaks. Often I would sit here in this solitary oak and watch the fox kits play around their den and watch the deer come to eat the apples in the fall. Times change. The fox dens are gone, probably due to the creation of the trail near them. The deer are more skittish due to the presence of more people. The ground is wetter due to a slight increase in the depth of Wolf Lake, causing a different type of grass to grow and allowing the willows and box elders to flourish here. The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Laura Van Slyke of the Wisconsin DNR. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form. Please print out a paper copy of the notification form, fill in all required information, then submit it to the land manager. The DNR Notification form and land manager information can be obtained at: http://www.wi-geocaching.com/hiding.
