At The Lake - Flying Gurnard
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is one in a series of caches that will take you to Greers Ferry Lake, thus the name. Along your tour you will see many of the highlights and/or businesses that are available in the Heber Springs area. You may even learn a little history or find out about a business located in this small rural town. These caches are micros and hidden in traditional ways. They only contain a log. Please bring a writing instrument. Congratulations to Eagle95 FTF on 6/16/07 As of 9/26/17 there isn't a series of caches to obtain a final location. Some of this series are remaining as stand alone caches. If you have comments or suggestions as to how this cache can be improved, please let me know in your online log. Above all, be safe, happy caching, and enjoy each day to its fullest. Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) - Inhabits sand, coral rubble, and sea grass areas; often near shallow patch and fringe reefs. Their distinctive features are: huge, fan-like pectoral fins that often have brilliant, iridescent blue line and dot markings. They have shades of gray to yellow-brown body with white spots. They can pale or darken dramatically. They have a blunt snout. Their size is 6 - 14 inches, with a maximum of 18 inches. Their depth ranges from 1 - 35 feet. It normally folds pectoral fins against its sides and perch, or “walk”, on ventral fins. If alarmed, it will spread pectorals and swim away. When foraging, they “walk” about on modified spines of ventral fins and also use them like hands to turn over rubble. They are shy and swim away from divers when they are approached. Moving into their direction of travel may enable a close view. They can be found occasionally to uncommon in Florida, the Bahamas, and in the Caribbean. They are also found near Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, south to Argentina, and in the eastern Atlantic.
