Geocache Description:

At the cache conception I had 100 cache finds, and hidden 10. To commemorate this, here is a tricky little devil which I hope should be fun. If history is not your strong point, the internet will be of great help.

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE CO-ORDINATES LISTED! THE CACHE IS HIDDEN WITHIN 1/2 MILE OF THE ABOVE CO-ORDINATES (AS THE CROW FLIES)

Being a fan of Rome on BBC2, and having enjoyed touring the historic sites of Rome, this puzzle cache may require a bit of research before setting out on your travels.

To locate the cache, answer the following questions correctly and enter you answer into the table below.

1)             How many soldiers was a centurion responsible for?

2)             In what year did the Romans first invade Britain?

3)             How many carrara were used to make Trajan’s Column?

4)             How many large forts were built along Hadrian’s Wall? (An even number)

5)             Which unlucky legion of Roman soldiers did Julius Ceaser lead?

6)             How many coffers were used in the dome of the pantheon?

7)             How many asses were there to a denarius? (After the 141 BC re-evaluation)

8)             In Britain the Northernmost Roman wall of note was the…(All are the same place)

AntonineWall, Severan Wall, or Grim’s Dyke, and was 37 miles long,

How many years did it take to build?

9)             In which year was Nero reported to have fiddled as Rome burnt?

10)           I am Sparticus, but when was Sparticus killed after leading 90,000 escaped slaves in fighting against the Romans? (An even number divisible by 3)

Add your answers in the column together and see that they match the checksum value.

When they do, you are a step closer to finding the cache!

Now all you have to do is add the digits of the answers together in the combinations stipulated below. If the answer has more than 1 digit, add the digits of your answer together, and keep doing so until a single digit results. The cache at:

N 54 36.ABC

W 05 49.DE0 where…

A = use all digits from answers 1 and 6

B = use all digits from answers 5 and 8

C = use all digits from answers 1 to 4 inclusive

D = use all digits from answers 1 and 10

E = use all digits from answers 7 to 10 inclusive

Example 1

Using the above example answers, Coordinate E uses the numbers 98, 2, 30 and 12.

Adding all the digits together gives 25 ie (9+8+2+3+0+1+2)

Adding the 2 and the 5 together gives 7.

So in this example, E = 7

Example 2

Using the above example answers, Coordinate A uses the numbers 23 and 37.

2+3+3+7 => 15

1+5 => 6

So in this example A = 6.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

You do not need to access private property or agricultural land to log the cache.

I would like to point out that Quickbrownfox found this without private emails or hints, and before the clues had been re-written. Questions edited 22 August 2007 to help identify the correct answers as there are a few ambiguities out there. Some more of the clues have been updated as of 07 October 2007 as people are having problems. So without having to spell it out (as it is a puzzle cache)…
