Geocache Description:

Sandhills Historical Site

This cache is nearly a drive-up, located at a spot that is near the center of one of the world’s greatest cattle producing areas – the Nebraska Sandhills. Made up of approximately 13 million acres of deep sand, with a high water table resulting in numerous lakes, this great sea of sand was deposited by winds of a desert climate that ended thousands of years ago. Today they are grass-covered and stable because of careful management of the native grasses by stockmen. These natural pastures are acclaimed as some of the best-managed rangeland in the world.

Cattle ranching is the main industry in the area, and of course, most residents eat beef. However, wildlife is abundant, and many people add spice to their life by hunting the big-eared mule deer that roam the hills.

The residents of Thomas County gather at this particular location for many social events, including another Sandhills tradition – rodeos.

This cache is located near Thedford, NE, a town of approximately 243 people, nestled in the Sandhills at the west junction of Highways 2 and 83. The town has its own grocery store, several churches of various denominations, elementary and high schools, a lumberyard, a bank, a library, several restaurants and motels, and even sports its own museum and art gallery – both located on Highway 2 as you drive through town. Several gas stations and convenience stores are located nearby as well. Thedford is the county seat and has a newly built courthouse surrounded by trees at the center of town.

The scenery along Highway 83 and Highway 2 is very beautiful – full of soap weed, native grasses, windmills, cattle, sunflowers, cactus, winding rivers, rolling hills and of course, the beautiful Nebraska sky.

Watch for stickers, as they are abundant. There is a picnic area near this cache and it is a nice place to take a break from driving, let the kids out for a run, or to water the pets. You are looking for a 1.5x4 inch plastic container with a twist-off lid. The cache fits snugly in its resting place, so remove and replace carefully please. This cache has room for very small tradeables. The FTF gift is a gold dollar.

The area around this cache is in need of CITO, so please help. Watch for muggles, as this area can be quite busy. Also, please take in the historical information that can be found here.
