Moneyreagh (in Irish: Mónaidh Riabhach, ie grey bog or moor) is a small village in County Down, with a population of around 1,000+, just off the main road from Belfast to Ballygowan. The Auld House at the top of the village has various bars and function rooms and is the hub of the village’s social life. Along with the Water Tower on Galloway Hill, adjacent to the village, significant landmarks include the Hillmount Rock which sits on Church Road.
The village’s Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church has a long history. The congregation dates back to the 18th century. The original meeting house was a barn like structure built in 1719. Beside the church stands the Richard Lyttle Memorial National School. This was used as a school from 1908 up until 1961.
However, these are no longer joined up as they were in the past, and subsequently Northern Ireland no longer boasts a major walking route similar to those in many other countries which boost their economies.
At present there are a number of different 'way' walks across Northern Ireland, such as the Causeway Coast Way, the Ring of Gullion Way and the Lecale Way in County Down, which more or less follow the same route as the original Ulster Way.
At the junction of A23 and B178 if coming from Belfast take B178 to Carryduff. Turn left (300 yds) from the junction onto Tower Lane, (be very careful this is on the crest of a hill and a slight curve). This is the start of Moneyreagh section of The Ulster Way. There is parking at the very top and end of the lane. You can park at the gates of the tower entrance. Walk down the GRASSY lane. The views from here are fantastic. From Scrabo Tower at Newtownards, right down Strangford to Portaferry, and over to Scotland
In a clear plastic bag and the 6x4 clear plastic w/p box there is, Log book and 2 pencils (remember to fill in), Geo badge, Very stretchy man, bottle opener key ring, Scottish trolley token, a FIRST TO FIND cert. and a Travel Bug.
Do not use the site driving instructions. Follow the instructions i suggest.......
