The City of Newcastle began planning the modernization of the
roadway in 1994, the year it incorporated. The city envisioned
turning the rural, two-lane road into a safer, more-attractive,
multi-lane parkway, befitting its stature as Newcastle's main
thoroughfare and the primary arterial between Bellevue and
Renton.
The project required several years, funding partners, and
infinite patience from local residents and businesses, who suffered
through traffic-clogging construction and a year-long closure of
the south end of Coal Creek (aka Duvall Ave) where it meets Sunset
Blvd in Renton. But the result is worth it - at least, we think so.
Come see for yourself.
Container is a smallish lock&lock, located on the public
trail system, and is outside the fenced retention pond. There are
several access points. One option is to park at the provided
parking coordinates and enter from the trailhead on the entrance
road (SE 91st) to the Highlands development. (If you use a Garmin
GPSr, Northwest
Trails could prove helpful.)
If you have time, walk down to May Creek Bridge - it looks even
better up close, and you can inspect the fine ironwork and
dedication plaque.
Congrats to my Newcastle neighbors, twinspin and daughters
kitty-kat and piggy-turtle, on their FTF on a rainy Monday
morning.
