Geocache Description:

: SH 29 10mi SE of Menard at roadside park

Pegleg Crossing is an hourglass shaped pass through the hills where McDougal Creek joins the San Saba River. For years an Indian campground, it entered history in 1732 as the site of a Spanish -Apache battle. Adventurers, mustang hunters, Indian fighters, German settlers, gold-seekers all passed through this area. The crossing was probably named by local landowner Wilhelm Harlen for one-legged Land Commissioner T.W. Ward. It became a station on a stage line and gained notoriety for the many hold-ups that occurred at ”robbers’ roost” which is about 1 mile west. Pegleg served at a later time as a crossing on Great Western cattle trail. As always in West Texas, watch for snakes, scorpions and other critters that bite and sting.
