Geocache Description:

Bear Mountain Trail begins on the Alexandria Hebron Highway just past GCQKKZ. That is a quick find and then on to this one which will require some hiking.

The trail head is marked by a wooden sign saying it was "cut by the boys and staff of Mowglis in 1942." That camp across Newfound Lake was named after the Jungle Book character. It is said that Bear Mountain resembles a reclining bear when viewed from out on the lake. I have never been able to see the resemblance but the name Baloo's Ear was given because using your imagination, the cache site could be where the Jungle Book bear's ear is located?
There is a small grassy parking spot for about two cars just uphill from the trail head past a yellow "Caution Ice Ahead" sign. Boomer and I made the trip up and back in one hour and 10 minutes with ample time for rests on the way up and one longer rest at the top.
The cache is placed almost at the top at 1509' because that is the best view spot. If you go all the way to the top you'll arrive at 43 degrees 39.482 and 071degrees 48.489 where Bear Mountain Trail meets Ellwell Trail. The height here is 1629'. Just to the right on Ellwell Trail is another cache and a view of Newfound Lake. The beginning of the slope is gradual and wooded but as you get farther up it gets quite steep and rocky. Be careful with your footing and don't go when the ground is wet. It is well marked with gray signs and a wolf picture and new yellow tape. See the views from the cache, the trail head marker and the trail signs in the gallery pictures.
Cache is a small Rubbermaid container with a blue lid. It is only big enough for small items and small travel bugs or geocoins. It is hidden about 20 feet off the trail past a blueberry patch. I have put some pictures in the gallery to make this find easier as my last visit put the coordinates about 14 feet off.
