Geocache Description:

Located on Curran Homestead property, off the Fields Pond Road, just across the Holden town line. Short trek into the woods along a cross-country ski trail.

This is my second Snipe Hunt hide, the first being in Trenton. As with the first one, this idea dates back to my early Boy Scout days when the troop leaders would take the youngsters out into the woods on a "snipe hunt", typically at night. We were given sticks and told to beat on the sides of trees in hopes of flushing out a "snipe" which was, supposedly, a bird that lived in hollows inside the trees or in holes along the roots. Of course, there was no such bird but the kids loved it. But this time the bird is really there and holding a log for you to sign. The cache is small/regular in size but the log container is micro so don't worry about trading items. Note to cachers: To keep critters away from this one (they must try to make it a winter home) I have poured black pepper into the hole and around the snipe. If you sneeze when finding this one...that's why....! Second note: The pepper didn't work....I've now placed moth balls in and around the cache.

You can park along the Fields Pond Road or in the Audubon Society parking lot and cross into the small field from there. Look for a cross country ski trail with a blue trail marker #10 at N44.44.420 W068.43.702. Enter the woods there and you will find the cache a short way in, approximately 40 feet to the north of the trail. I had a very difficult time getting my el-cheapo GPS to settle down under the canopy so if the coords are off please let me know so that I can adjust them.

Permission for this cache was given by the Board of The Curran Homestead. The Curran Homestead is a wonderfully restored 1890's working farm and museum. Work continues which includes some very nice vegetable gardens, a barn full of old carriages and old farm tools and antiques. There is an annual open house with tours of the facility featuring tour guides who will detail the history of this interesting homestead. Fields Pond is right across the road. Enjoy!
