Cache is hidden a few minutes walk on the bridleway from the stone circle, which will take about 20/25 minuets to reach, alternatively it can be reached by bike or horse..........
Swinside Stone circle or Sunkenkirk as it is also known is a Neolithic Bronze age structure, aprox 3300BC,the circle is regarded my many as to be the finest most complete circle not only in Britain but in Western Europe, and unlike Castlerigg and Long Meg,it is only lacking in visitor numbers due to it's splendid isolation and a walk of a mile from the nearest parking point to reach it,the circle is 93 feet in diameter, the tallest stone standing at 7 foot six inches and stands exactly at North, excavations at the beginning of this century showed the stones to be bedded on compacted pebbles, the standing stones themselves are Porphyritic slate, from the adjacent fells, the tallest and heaviest weighs around 5 tons..........................
The circle is on private land next to the bridleway, but a gate gives access to the site, the cache is hidden a further 5 minuets walk away along the bridleway which passes through Swinside farm, and needless to say is Not hidden in any nearby stone wall or wrapped in a totally unnecessary plastic bag.
The site chosen for the cache is also a good point for distant pics of the circle including surrounding fells, unfortunately on the day of placing the cache visibility was very poor due to rain and low cloud but hopefully more pic's to follow.
