FTF by heyubear! Nice job!
JR, not Jr., stands for Jacob Russell, who was a fascinating man, if only for the reason that he was the grandfather of the man who eventually put the Shaker in Shaker Heights!
A veteran on the American Revolution, he acquired land for farming; subsequently, this land was passed on to his sons. After spending some time as a guest in a Shaker home, Ralph Russell (1789-1864) became so enthralled in the Shaker way of life that he gave his land to the Shakers to make a new settelement.
The Shakers thought it was vain to have one's name inscribed on a headstone; thus, only his initials grace this nice sandstone marker: JR. It is also interesting to note that although Russell's grave is marked in the traditional Shaker manner, it's location is well outside the boundaries of the area the Shakers used for burying their dead (their cemetery was to the west of this location, across present day Lee Road).
At the time, it was known to the world as the North Union Colony, but to the Shakers, it was thought of as the "Valley of God's Pleasure".
Today, we call it Shaker Heights!
