De pinguin is een vogel die nog niet kan vliegen. Daarom werd deze
vogel het symbool voor vele leerling piloten in de belgische
luchtmacht. De vliegopleiding van al onze belgische militaire
piloten startte hier. Indertijd was het 5e smaldeel hier gevestigd,
tot in 1996 beslist werd van alle vliegopleiding samen te brengen
in Bevekom. sindsdien staat deze kazerne helemaal te verkommeren.
Enkel de hangars worden nog gebruikt voor de luchtkadetten, een
organistaie voor jongeren die via zweefvliegen kennis kunnen maken
met alles wat luchtvaart te betekenen heeft.
English: The penguin is a bird which cannot fly. Because of this
inability to fly, a student pilot was compared with the pinguins.
All belgian military student pilots started their flying carreer in
this military base. In 1996 the pilot school was moved to another
miliitary base, and since then this facility is left to decay. The
only activity in here is now in the old hangars, where the air
cadets have their base. This is an organisation for youngsters that
can get to know all about flying by gliding.
