Located between the towns of Lincoln and North Woodstock this little known forest suffered the ravages of a major storm on April 15, 2007. This wind storm hit the Nothern sections of New Hampshire in Coos, Grafton, and Carroll counties. During that storm, winds reached 75-100 mph. Many houses, barns and woodlots were affected. At Fay State Forest, approx. 100 acres were blown over or damaged. Many of these trees were completely uprooted and a few snapped in half. The N.H. Division of Forest and Lands has decided to salvage the area to utilize all the wood on the ground. This will provide an opportunity for the State of New Hampshire to make larger openings on this state land. Openings such as this will allow for structural diverstity and in salavaging the area, forest fire hazards will be minimized. A timber harvest will provide for an excellent wildlife habitat as well as a great food source. Look for an increase in wildlife and regeneration in the coming years.
This is a two part multi-cache. The first part will bring you to the entrance of the forest. At the first waypoint you will find information which will direct you to the final. Approach to the final will be most easily achieved by first heading back towards the parking coordinates. A more direct but bushwacking route may be made through trails of the forest to the final. This will afford a more close-up view of the destructive forces of nature, but do watch your step along the way if you decide to go through the forest.
