Geocache Description:

AT CAMP CHANCO'S REQUEST, PLEASE PLACE A SIGN ON YOUR DASHBOARD ANNOUNCING YOU ARE PARKING THERE TO GEOCACHE. PARK JUST INSIDE THE GATE ON YOUR RIGHT. PLEASE DO NOT GO FURTHER INTO THE CAMP & CONFERENCE CENTER. THANKS.

Chanco was a Native American emissary between the Pamunkey tribe and the settlers of Jamestown. A semi-historical story tells about his warning an English settler before a coordinated attack of the Powhatan Confederacy on March 22, 1622. As the story goes, Chanco, a Christian convert in the employ of Richard Pace, was assigned by his chief, Opechancanough, to kill Pace and his family. Chanco could not bear to take Pace's life so, risking his own, he warned Pace of the pending slaughter. Chanco will long be remembered as the Indian lad who helped save Jamestown.

"Chanco" is also used in the name of "Chanco On the James," a summer camp, and year-round retreat and conference center, on the banks of the James River in Surry County, Virginia, which is owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia. Chanco is one of the oldest camping programs in Virginia for boys and girls 8-18 years old, having operated continuously since its founding in 1968. It offers young people an enjoyable camping experience in a beautiful outdoor setting within a supportive Christian community.

The camp program offers climbing-skill classes on a ropes course, waterfront and pool activities including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing, as well as nature photography, arts and crafts, archery, and introductory golf. Chanco has a variety of trips off-site to challenge the adventure seeking camper.

The retreat and conference center is available year-round for large and small groups both within and beyond the Episcopal Church. Rates are very reasonable.

This cache (an ammo box) is placed with the permission of the director of Chanco. Parking is available just inside the camp gate on a shoulder of the entrance road (N37 11.513 W076 54.072). I do not recommend parking on Swann's Point Road as it is very narrow and the shoulders are not well graded.

Congratulations to CaverRick as FTF
