Geocache Description:

-- THIS IS AN EARTHCACHE, READ BELOW FOR LOGGING REQUIREMENTS --

The Peterborough drumlin Field covers over 900 square kilometers on a Paleozoic limestone plain and is one of the largest drumlin fields in North America. Drumlins are easily identified from Topographical maps, which can be found at the local library.

The Drumlin Field centres around Peterburough, and consist of streamlined hills, several hundred meters wide, and sometimes more then a kilometer in length. Their profile will often resemble an upside down spoon, or a large oval hill. The dominant drumlin orientation in the area is North-Northeast. North of Rice lake, drumlins tend to be spindle-shaped (1) , while south of rice lake they are more oval (2).

The drumlins are composed of well sorted and stratified sand and gravel and glacial Till, and typically occur behind well defined morrain formations (In this case, the Oak Ridges Morrain to the south), although it is not fully understood why, as Drumlin formation is not a well understood geological process.

Since the drumlins rise above the surrounding wetlands of the area, agricultural activity occurs on top of them (taking advantage of the better-drained soil) and forest cover occurs between and around them. This visually obvious land cover distinction between agriculture and forest helps emphasize the characteristic teardrop shape of some of the drumlins as well as the general pattern of drumlin fields in the area. An interesting fact about drumlins is that they indicate the direction of ice movement from continental glaciers during the last period of glaciation. Ice retreat occurred in the direction toward the pointed or tail parts of the teardrop-shaped drumlins.

Drumlin Field Animation and Explanation

Your Mission, should you choose to accept it, Is to find a drumlin in the Peterborough, Lindsay or Rice Lake area. That is the easy part.

YOUR FOUND IT LOG MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

(put your answer in the found log - no need to email me!)
  1. Coordinates of a location somewhere near the top of the drumlin (if you are not using the above coordinates)
  2. Best picture you can take showing the profile of the drumlin
  3. The angle at which the drumlin seems to be oriented (Take multiple readings along the drumlin and try and find the angle that the drumlin is oriented)

Do not worry about answering the angle question wrong - just worry about answering it!! Wrong answers will not disqualify your find.
