Ehrenberg, AZ Pioneer Cemetery

Tom Hamilton ran a combination store, saloon, and brothel in Ehrenberg, AZ, a brawling frontier town in the 1860’s. Gold was discovered about half way between Ehrenberg and Quartzsite and the little frontier town became a hub of activity. A ferry across the Colorado River was established to support the growing town of Ehrenberg but then the gold ran out and Ehrenberg became one of the 27 ghost towns in Arizona.

The old Pioneer Cemetery was established in June 1862 and the last time a person was placed here was in April 1988. Most of the wooden markers have been lost to the ravages of the harsh weather but the grave sites are still easily identified and a few markers remain. It is said that this was a true melting pot because “pioneers of all races and moral persuasions” (according to the sign at the entrance) are buried here.

Please take a moment to consider the people buried here. Their lives and deaths had a great impact on this area.

The cache is not in the cemetery boundaries but is found just west of the main gate.
