What you can see ahead of you is a Napoleonic Fort (Battery), one of two that survived in this area. Built around the 1790s the rear defence wall is still intact.
During the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, Britain faced invasion by forces of unprecedented size, and, for the first time, attempts were made to deny the whole lengths of coastline to an enemy.
Something of a new approach to the defence of coasts was demonstrated at Dungeness, where four widely spaced batteries with the assistance of an inland redoubt, both covered the offshore anchorages and commanded the approaches to its beaches. These batteries, including this one at Lade, made of shingle contained within brick revetments and internal structures, embodied a distinctive new design that was used for many of the smaller batteries built during the later 1790s in Kent and elsewhere. Their guns were arranged in a faceted arc to seaward, with the rear enclosed by a defensible triangle of walls. The gun carriages were raised on the recently invented timbre traversing platforms, an important technological break-through. Moving on a curved metal rail, guns could be rapidly swung on a target.
