Geocache Description:

Got the idea to setup a multicache, with a triathlon format. Also mixed a bit of local history into the cache as well.

James Lytle was just 17 when he came to Canada from County Cavan, northern Ireland, in the mid-1800's. He aquired 100 acres of land on Moodie Drive, built a log home, and began what would become an impressive apple orchard. James was joined over the next few years by his mother, sister, and brother, and in time married Letitia (Ludlow) with whom he raised 9 children. His brother, John Lytle, ran shot gun for travellers to and from Bells Corners which earned him the nick name 'Blunderbuss Lytle' (from the blunderbuss shotgun he carried). The Lytle farm was passed down through the family until it was sold.

To find this cache, you will need to complete a geocaching triathlon. There are three events required to complete this cache, each with redirects 300-400m apart:

  • Computation
  • Projection
  • Substitution

All redirects can be found adjacent to a walking/bike path that runs through the are (partially paved, or stonedust).

Computation. Go to the posted coordiates for this cache, and perform the following computation based on the specific years identfied on the plaque. Add the year James Lytle arrived in Canada to 45 14.751. Subtract the year the family farm was sold from 75 49.607. Now go find the copper redirect.

Projection. The copper tag you have found contains two three digit numbers. The first number is a bearing (True North). The second number is the distance in meters. You will find the next redirect written on a concrete object. Update Mar21/09: copper re-direct found on nearby tree, well above snow levels. The 2000lb concrete object has been removed... you are in the correct area when you walk over a small stream that is flowing from the culvert.... tag is visible from the trail.

Substitution. Use the numbers you have found on this (formerly) non-mobile trebuchet dropping, for the final cache location.

Should be an easy walk... when path is dry, should be largely stroller friendly. Setup to be done easily on bike, or via ski or toboggan (seasonal). All tags can be found with your bike at your side.... and the cache is 5m off the trail. Total length of the cache is about 1km. Enjoy.
