This cache is near the Table Rock Overlook in the Canaan
Mountain area of the Monongahela National Forest. In my opinion,
this overlook offers one of the best views in the Cheat Ranger
District. The entire Red Run Valley can be seen and several
mountains, including Shavers Mountain, are visable in the
distance.
I first visited this area a few years ago while seeking another
cache, since archived, and have been hoping another one would be
placed to lure me back. Well, after two plus years, it didn't
happen so I decided to put one out to showcase this location. For
the old timers this will be a repeat but as stunning as the view is
I think it's worth it.
You can reach the Table Rock Overlook Trail parking, adjacent to
FR 13 (Canaan Loop Road) from two directions. The easiest approach
by passenger vehicle is from WV Rt 32 near Canaan Heights. It's a
9.8 mile drive following this route. For the more adventurous you
may approach from Blackwater Falls State Park. I haven't been in
this way so I have no idea what the road is like. I was warned last
time I was here that it might be a BAD idea to try it in my
Terrible Tempo. This access is 6.6 miles.
Once at the trailhead you've got a 1.2 mile hike to the cache.
The trail starts as a rocky gradual ascent then descends slightly
into a boggy (replace "boggy" with MUD if it has recently rained)
footpath through dense rhododendron.
After finding the cache (a very easy find because the nearby
location is the real treasure), continue a short distance to the
overlook. Please try to rehide unseen because this area receives a
fair amount of visitors.
As always, pay attention to your surroundings, enjoy, and be
safe.
The cache is a 30 cal ammo box.
