Geocache Description:

This is a cache and dash, although it could be part of a longer walk (plans for a nearby cache are underway) on a public footpath with parking available nearby. The terrain difficulty is set due to the gradient and condition of the footpath. A stile will need to be negotiated. Parking is available at N51o 43.974 W003o 15.678

Troedrhiw'rfuwch was a small Welsh village situated in the Rhymney Valley. Built during the time when coal was king, it is difficult now to imagine that this was a close knit community of approximately 60-80 houses. One terrace each side of the road and two terraces behind. A community centre was situated to the West of the parking spot and this was a focal point for the village.

In the 1970’s the residents were informed that the mountain that overlooked the village was moving and that they should leave. During the exodus many relocated to the nearby villages of Pontlottyn, New Tredegar and others nearby. The houses were demolished in the early 80’s and all that remained were the farm house, post office, and local hostelry. The inn (which was situated by the side of the foot path) was demolished sometime after 1985 (I know this year from personal experience). In the late 90’s picnic tables were set up for a motor stop and trees planted were the houses once stood. The mountain still stands.

Former residents often wonder at the reasons behind the evacuation and if the reports of the movement were genuine. It may have been that this was a knee jerk reaction of the Aberfan Disaster, but there the slippage was of coal waste, here it is solid rock. Whatever the reasons, Troedrhiw’rfuwch no longer has signs entering the village and is hardly shown on any map.

The cache is a small plastic container, please bring your own writing implement.
