Geocache Description:

12 Mile ROUND-TRIP hike to top of Mt. Ontario on dirt trails.
Wilderness permit and Adventure pass are required.
Plan on spending 1/2 or full day hike.

This is a destination cache!
A cache with great accomplishment when you complete the hike.

Waashmi and I started hiking together a couple years ago and have seen some spectacular views through our hiking adventures. We were on Cucamonga Peak just a couple weeks ago talking about our plans for this peak when I was suprised to see there wasn't a cache on the top of Mt. Ontario. Well, since Waashmi wanted to hike here next, I saw this as an opportunity to create that missing cache and bring it with us!

Parking for this can be located at the Ice House Canyon trailhead at: N34 15.007 W117 38.171. An Adventure Pass IS REQUIRED for your parked vehicle in this lot.

Wilderness passes are available in person at the Mt. Baldy Vistors Center in the Mt. Baldy Village. For hikers wanting to start their hike before the Visitors Center opens at 8 a.m. a permit can be obtained the day before by calling the Vistors Center at 909-982-2829. The permit will be left on the bulletin board outside the Visitors Center.

This hike has an approx. 3,700 FT elevation gain along a marked dirt trail that runs approx 3.5 Miles from the parking lot to Ice House Saddle, then heads southwest another 2.5 Miles on the Kelly Camp trail through Kelly Camp to Mt.Ontario.

You will be looking for a camo'd ammo can, placed in the rocks at the summit. FTF will get 5 $omethings for being first. Cache contains Multi-use pliers, a TB, a second TB, a Geocoin, Emergency Poncho, Parachute Line, Electrical Tape, Combo-LED Flashlight / level, Stuff and a Logbook. Please Hide as well as you found, or better if needed.

On the day of the hike we watched 3 bighorn sheep cross our trail just 100 ft ahead, stopped and filled up on fresh spring water, ate Gooseberries and a couple Elerberries. REMEMBER - Keep a sharp eye out for wild life, including snakes!
